Mia Shay St Hilaire Obituary, Death - 12-Year-Old Girl Dies After Fatal Allergic Reaction to Milkshake in London

Mia Shay St Hilaire, a 12-year-old girl who died after suffering a severe allergic reaction to a milkshake in London in August 2023, is being remembered as her family continues to call for stronger food safety measures to protect people with allergies. Findings from the investigation have highlighted how cross-contamination from a blender that had not been properly cleaned exposed Mia to an ingredient that posed a potentially fatal risk to her health.

Mia had been visiting a London café with her aunt and sister when she ordered a Twix milkshake. She had a serious tree nut allergy, but the drink was reportedly prepared using a blender that had previously been used to make a hazelnut milkshake without being washed between orders.

The traces left behind in the blender exposed Mia to the allergen. Shortly after drinking the milkshake, she suffered a severe allergic reaction and collapsed at her aunt’s home. She was taken to hospital, where medical staff attempted to save her life. Despite their efforts, she died, leaving her family devastated.

The investigation later established the role of the uncleaned blender in the fatal incident, bringing attention to the dangers of cross-contamination in food and drink preparation. Even when an order does not intentionally contain a particular allergen, equipment used for previous orders can pose a serious risk if it is not thoroughly cleaned.

Café Owner Penalized Over Food Safety Violations

Following the investigation, the café’s former owner admitted six food safety violations. He was fined £18,000 and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service. He no longer operates the café.

The case has raised questions about the precautions food businesses should take when serving customers with severe allergies. For people who can experience life-threatening reactions to particular ingredients, clear communication, proper cleaning procedures and careful handling of orders are essential.

Mia’s parents believe their daughter could still be alive if the appropriate allergy precautions had been followed. Their grief has also motivated them to advocate for changes that could help prevent similar tragedies.

Family Calls for Stronger Allergy Safety Standards

Three years after Mia’s death, her parents are calling for separate allergy safety ratings for restaurants and cafés. They hope that clearer information about how businesses manage allergens will help customers make safer decisions when eating away from home.

Their campaign reflects the lasting consequences of a tragedy that began with an ordinary visit to a café. It also underscores the importance of ensuring that food businesses take allergies seriously and have reliable procedures to prevent cross-contact between ingredients.

Mia Shay St Hilaire’s death remains a heartbreaking reminder of the risks faced by people with severe food allergies. As her family continues to honour her memory, they hope that greater awareness and stronger safety standards will help protect other children and prevent another family from experiencing a similar loss.
